The allure of enhanced performance and security with MySQL 8.0 is undeniable. However, the decision to mandate a minimum requirement of MySQL 8.0 for Joomla 5, despite Joomla 5 not utilizing any new features MySQL 8.0 offers, is a misstep that could hinder rather than propel progress.

Acknowledging that Joomla 5 functions seamlessly on MySQL 5.7 and recommending MySQL 8.0 for its advancements is a much more reasonable approach. Delaying the requirement bump to MySQL 8.0 until Joomla 6 would ensures a smoother transition to Joomla 5, preventing unnecessary disruptions to users and hosting providers.

By prematurely enforcing MySQL 8.0, Joomla is alienating users and creating unwarranted obstacles. This is driving individuals away from the platform altogether. It's imperative to exercise caution and ensure that requirements align with the majority of users' capabilities and infrastructure.

Fortunately, it's not too late to rectify this situation. Rolling back the requirement to MySQL 5.7 and recommending (instead of requiring) MySQL 8.0 would result in a higher adoption rate for Joomla 5. Failure to do so will see users cling to Joomla 4 beyond its end of support date or, worse, migrate to alternative CMS options.
